The Helix Team is proud to announce an RSS Feed for our forum.

The link is helixtech.com/forums/rss.php

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. You use an RSS reader program (which usually works a lot like an email program) to check/read your news. The RSS feed will change when, in this case, a topic gets created, or when someone replies to a thread.

RSS is a technology that has been readily adopted by most news-oriented websites and weblogs. It makes keeping up with the news very easy.

As Matt said today: "It [RSS] is a lot easier than visiting my dozen some-odd news sites in a browser every morning".

There are several RSS readers for OS X. You can find the (seemingly) most popular ones at ranchero.com/netnewswire/ and www.fondantfancies.com/shrook/.

The Team has been using this functionality of the forums for the past few days, and we've been pleased with the results..

If you have any comments/questions, feel free to post away...

For those who like their software free, try one of the following 3 freeware RSS readers available at versiontracker.com:

SlashDock
NewsMac
NetNewsWire Lite

Since this topic came up (again) recently, here are some more RSS readers for your using pleasure.

For those still on OS 9, AmphetaDesk seems to work pretty well. Find it at www.disobey.com/amphetadesk/. The OS 9 version contains a double-clickable, self contained server application. Launch this server, then use the (supplied) URL in your webbrowser to access your subscriptions. It's pretty neat, and was really easy to get running.

I also found Newsmonster (at www.newsmonster.org/ ). It's a Netscape (Navigator) extension - however testing on my OS 9 machine, well, wasn't spectacular (I couldn't ever get it to subcribe to feeds).

There's also NewsIsFree ( www.newsisfree.com/ ). This is a website that will display your subscriptions, without having to run any software on your computer. I didn't try it out.

I thought "Hey! Here's my chance to see what this RSS crap it all about."

But no joy.

-Mac OS 8.6
-IE 5.1.7
-amphetadesk v0.93.1

If I click on the aforementioned link, it pops up a new blank window in IE, and a topmost dialogue box that says "Loading channel." with a scroll bar. The scroll bar doesn't move, the dialogue box closes, and the window in question remains blank.

If I paste the link within amphetadesk, running in an IE window from launch, it refreshes the screen, but adds in red text "AmphetaDesk could not determine the format of http://helixtech.com/forums/rss.php" and nothing is added to my subsription list.

amphetadesk does allow me to remove default subscriptions that came with it, so it seems to be implemented as expected.

So, now what? I have no experience with this protocol, but everything seems well behaved.

I had to abandon amphetadesk, but "Faust's Friend" is working for me now.

This morning I added RSS auto-discovery capabilities to the forums. This means that Safari 2.0 (for OS X 10.4 "Tiger") will now show the blue RSS button - subscribing to the RSS feed and keeping track of the forums that way - is now just one-click away.

Those of you who don't have a seperate RSS reader: Safari's built-in RSS reader is quite good (and free!)

Enjoy!
