If you post a message to the forum, you may return to find it deleted. This can happen for a number of reasons...

  • The comments were incorporated into the original message. For example, if we open a topic with "here are the seven ways to skin a cat" and you reply with "you forgot number 8..." we will probably incorporate your item into the original list and delete your post. Our goal is primarily to develop a spec; the conversation is secondary.

  • It was a "me too" post. If Joe posts "a static detector would be good" and Emily adds a post that says "yeah, a static detector would be great" then Emily's post will probably be deleted. We really need to keep the amount of information here manageable and unless we specifically note otherwise, "votes" aren't counted. So unless it is is an opinion poll you are responding to, if the info has been conveyed once, that's sufficient.

  • It was off-topic. If the topic is "All about Cats" and you post "Dogs are nice too." it will probably get deleted. That does not mean that your comments were wrong or that we disagree, it just means that it won't help us define the spec that this topic is about.

  • It was a rant or a snipe. This is a particular peeve of mine, so I'll be quick to delete any posts that aren't truly constructive in helping us define a spec. If the subject is "Cat Sweater Essentials" and you post "Why bother? Cats are stupid." it will not stand. Call it censorship, strongarming, or anything you want, but it just won't happen here. those are the rules.

  • Your registration is anonymous. We have requested that all forum participants clearly identify themselves if they want to participate in the discussions. (All you have to do is edit your profile and put your real name in your signature.) Those who choose to remain anonymous may do so, but are more likely to have marginal messages deleted.

  • Keep in mind that first and foremost, this forum idea was brought to light so that the user base could help us resolve thorny issues and refine specifications for future versions of Helix. It's not intended to be a 'chat board' per se. The Helix List serves that purpose well, and since it isn't ours, you can speak freely over there. If demand for an official Helix chat board is demonstrated, we'll consider putting one up.
