In converting to MLTE (see our Xcode transition page) we discovered that Apple has "semi-officially" depreciated the old "Outline" and "Shadow" styles.
This presents a problem when converting old collections to OS X. The Shadow style is easy to handle, because there is a new and significantly improved shadow mechanism and we can create a reasonable facsimile with that. But there is no Outline equivalent without going around MLTE and into the Core Graphics engine. That's an awful lot of work for what appears to be very little gain.
Here are screen shots of the "before" and "after" -- note particularly the Outline and Shadow lines.

Our current plan is to leave existing outline info in place, but have the OS X Helix ignore it. If you open the collection with Classic Helix the Outline style will still be there -- until you edit that text. At that point, the Outline style data will be lost forever.
So the questions are: will losing the Outline style have a negative impact on your existing collections? If you want the Outline style to stay, how much of a delay are you willing to accept in exchange?

Since the outline style is typically used to hilight a header etc, I think that ignorning the formatting would lead to a loss of that hilight. My suggestion would be to display it as Bold so it retains some form of hilighting. I wouldn't use Shadow even though it is a closer match than Bold, but will make the text significantly wider and lead to other formatting issues.

I don't think that implementing the outline style would otherwise be useful.

Resisting planned depreciation by Apple of features or technologies seems a waste of time, energy and resources. The Outline style always appeared literally rough around the edges, so I think few will miss it. Future versions of Helix should ignore the Outline style. Limited development resources should be devoted to fully supporting current and future technologies.

Outlined Text. Let it wither on the vine. It's not worth diverting any effort
