Helix 5.1 is the last version of Helix that runs on OS 7.5.5 - 8.1. Helix 5.2 requires 8.5, and Helix 6 will require 8.6. Beginning with OS 8, Color QuickDraw is always available. Currently Helix is full of "if colorQuickDraw is available..." branches. Assuming an 8 bit (minimum) display simplifies coding.

There are not any black and white displays in use here. You may safely assume all Macs have color displays.

We're talking about QuickDraw (=Mac OS) calls, not calls to other potential platforms.

Current OS does not even allow the user to select B&W as a display option. 256 colors (8-bit) is minimum. Been nice knowing you, B&W, but its time to move on. Don't call.
