With the announcement of the new G5's and rumors of 2-4-6 processor G5 Xservers in the pipeline, it got me thinking about Helix v6 on OS X. My world would be better if I could run multiple Helix Server collections on one, very fast Xserve, remotely located from our operating divisions, and accessible over the internet. Our collections include some that are heavily used and some that are lightly used. Ever time I think of a new helpful, stand alone database, I have to also consider adding new iMacs as servers in each location, etc. Often these do not get implemented due to the extra cost and hassle. The current machines/OS are incapable of handling this without killing performance. Also TCP/IP needs speed improvements. But, the G5 machines look like they might be able to take care of the performance issues. I am posting this as my desired future Helix state and hoping that it is within Helix v6's capabilities. I am convinced that, in the near future, remote (internet) access to Helix Servers is going to be required as the norm rather than the exception. thoughts? (' ')Dana

It'd be nice if one machine could run multiple copies of Helix Server (maybe it can?) or one copy of Helix Server could serve up 2 or 3 Helix collections at once (maybe for an additional $$)....???

SPECULATION FOLLOWS Seems that if you have two copies of Helix Server with different serial numbers, you could start them each up on the same machine and serve a different collection. But you'd only want to do it if both are low-usage collections (or one is a very-low usage collection); otherwise, they're going to be fighting over the processor and hurt each other's performance. chuck |
