I am looking into using a Macintosh emulation running Helix Client. I know of PearPC and SoftMac. Please respond if you have tried this. I am interested to know how well it works.

Well, with PearPC, you'd be running the Classic environment under OS X on emulated hardware. I can't see performance being stellar IF it works at all. With regard to SoftMac, you might be able to learn something through the creator's site at:

Just some thoughts, as I have no experience with either product...

I'm curious as to why you're even considering it though. Are you stuck with Windows machines or something?

Yes, I am in part stuck with windows machines for some of my clients. I hope to open up access of our database to our outside sales representatives so they can have immediate access to thier orders and associated information. They all run windows based machines. Also about half of our office is mac/windows and I want the windows users to also have this access as well.

The windows users reason for being on that platform is because of autocad. Unfortunately autocad does not support a mac platform. Recently our company was bought over by an all windows platform company. It would be good if they had client access as well.

Keeping the Helix Server and Helix Rade only on the mac platform is o.k. with me. However, allowing access to the server via a widows based client is critical for the continued use of this software and growth of this use of this product.

Have you thought about Web enabling the forms/functionality to which you need to provide cross-platform access?

Can you explain "Web enabling the forms/functionality to which you need to provide cross-platform access".

OR refer me to some text in the Helix Reference (or elsewhere) which explains this.

Sounds like this might be a solution to my needs.

Thanks,

John

Sorry John, I didn't mean to be so vague. I was just referring to the different third party options available for getting Helix data onto the Web. There are three that I'm aware of:

CallHelix (involves creating AppleScript CGI's)
http://www.autographsystems.com/scripting/callhelix/

Qilan (also moves data between Helix and SQL DB's)
http://www.qilan.com/

DataGate (fast, flexible, requires Web dev knowledge)
http://www.adeptool.com/

Of course, none of these options would be as simple to implement as just building your solution in Helix and distributing a client application. However, if you _must_ have cross platform and/or Web access to your Helix data, you might want to explore them further. The latter is my creation. It currently works only with Engine or RADE, but it should work with the OS X native version of Helix Server (version 6) after it's released. If you wish to discuss it further, feel free to contact me privately.

Regards,

Thanks Steve,

You have been a great help!

I see the benefits of accessing our database from a web browser to gain cross platform access. This is exactly what we need.

I thought it might be best to develop the website myself. This way when the Helix database changes then I can make the necessary changes on the website as well. Do you think I can effectively develop a website on my own without formal education and link it via your software to the Helix database or should I sign up for a couple of website development classes at the local junior college. I do not have any experience with Apache, Adobe Go Live or other website software and the only programming experience I have was about 20 years ago with fortran and basic.

I appreciate your comments.

John

Hi John,

Please contact me at my email address. I don't want to appear as though I'm abusing the QSA forum to hawk my wares. :-)

Thanks,
