This problem may be addressed in the official documentation, but if it has, I have not found it. I also posted this on the Helix-List, but I did not receive a reply. So, here goes...

I have a Humpback Whale research database (currently 40 Meg). Internal Picture field thumbnails are used for whale identifications. At this point, I have over 1500 individual whales identified (with at least 2000 more awaiting data entry). When new whales are sighted and photographed, the new images are compared with existing ones in order to determine whether this is a new animal or a resight. I use larger JPEG images for this purpose. These images are stored in an External Document field. At this point, these images are 4.3 Gig in size.

When I moved the Collection and the external images to my powerbook in order to take them to a professional conference. All the paths were lost--forcing me to employ a Find All and manually reestablish the pathways (I had even renamed disks and folders so that they were the same as on my desktop). This process was "way too time consuming." Is there not a way to automate this process? I don't know if apple scripts would work, but I have no experience working with them.

Any insights would be appreciated. If there are no options currently available, then maybe such a feature could be added to the"new feature dream list"! Thanks.

To phyisically change paths you can refer back to the response on the Helix List dated June 4:

Incidently, this situation is something addressed within Mailabacus. If you login as the cameo user there is an option for changing the paths of all documents that are imported, exported, and displayed. Basically, a path can be stored as a global variable. Helix 5.2 can look this up and add the document name to display an external image. This way you can switch back and forth between multiple locations for a portable Collection and you eliminate the need to post all records.
