Under OS X, we are no longer allowed to put things in the Apple Menu. This does not really present a problem for Helix itself, as we can move our Help items to the Help menu and our About items to the Application menu. But what about custom users? Do you put things in the Apple menu of your user icons? If so, what? since we have to move them somewhere, where should we move them to? We will most likely have to come up with a "one answer fits all" solution -- asking the person running Update Collection to choose where to move them is not a practical solution -- so give us your thoughts.

I never put anything in the Apple menu so its not an issue for me. If others do, I would suggest that if you find items in there that were added by the developer, you move them to a new menu called "Apple Menu" at the far left next to the real OS X Apple Menu. My guess is that there will be no "right" solution for where this stuff goes for everyone. Putting it into an "Apple Menu" menu will make it obvious what happened, and the developer can change it to the location that suits him when he feels like it, and then get rid of the new "Apple Menu" And I'm using "him" in the most generic "he/she" kind of way :-)

The Application menu is where traditional Apple menu stuff (like "About (this application)") got moved by Apple. It makes sense to me to remain consistant with the rest of the OS and move the stuff found in the Apple menu to that menu - not invent our own custom menu (even if it is just temporary). quote: Right. "Help" and "Custom Help" will move to the Help menu, but "About Helix..." and "Helix ... Info" will move to the Application menu. Our thinking is that unless somebody comes up with a compelling reason not to, we'll put anything else that the designer put there in the Application menu. That doesn't really help me personally, as I have my own help system that I usually put in the Apple menu, (I remove Helix's Help items altogether) so my stuff will end up in the wrong place. The purpose of posting this question is to find out what other people put there. If 95% of the replies say "I put help related items there" that will impact our decision. - Edited by Matt on: Jun 16, 2004 11:34:47 am

I don't usually put stuff in the Apple menu but agree the application menu would be the obvious next location.

Occasionally I place hidden feature access items there -- rarely help files to my recollection. Since the real Help menu has been inaccessible, my help is typically under the File menu. (This won't be appropriate under OS X.) To me, the logical place to move anything (other than the aforementioned standard items) under the Apple menu would be to the Application menu. It seems with a one-size-fits all solution, some users will need to make a manual move anyway. - Edited by keVin on: Jun 16, 2004 2:59:18 pm |

We put two “Info” type commands on the Apple menu. These commands open a pseudo persistent splash window and a general description of the form permissions granted to the Prototype User used as the basis for the currently logged in User. It seems appropriate that these commands be moved to the Application menu.

I seldom have used the Apple menu. I agree that the Application menu is probably the best place.

This will not pose any problems with us. Sven

I rarely add to the Apple menu. Occasionally, I'll put a splash screen there (About ... whatever the app is). And I've put my own Help system there a couple of times. I can suggest moving everything to Application unless you see a custom item with the word Help in it, and move that to the Help menu. |

I can't believe a while back I actually wrote that I don't put anything in my Apple menu! That's a lie! ![]() Under System 9, I put lots of things in there, and under OS X, I use FruitMenu to build a list of frequently used items. But no, I don't put any Helix items in users' Apple menus, and given the current flexibility of creating menus, I cannot see any advantage to doing so, nor any problem in eliminating the capability. In converting a System 9 collection with Apple-menu items, perhaps the updater could create a new menu entitled "Converted" or some such and move the items there. - Edited by gibhenry on: Aug 21, 2004 2:31:01 pm - Edited by gibhenry on: Aug 21, 2004 2:32:00 pm

Not a single thing under the Apple menu in our Helix. We use our own menues for everything.
